ASEAN-Europe Meeting 2012

The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) is an informal process of dialogue and cooperation bringing together the 28 European Union member states, 2 non-member European countries, together with 21 Asian countries and the ASEAN Secretariat. The ASEM dialogue addresses political, economic and cultural issues, with the objective of strengthening the relationship between our two regions, in a spirit of mutual respect and equal partnership. In 2012, Lao PDR hosted the 9th ASEM, the largest meeting of it kind that the nation has hosted.

The ASEM9 logo design paints the letters “a” for Asia and “e” for Europe by combining two sets of curved lines in red and blue to represent silk threads that are an integral part of Lao culture and handicraft. Colours were carefully chosen in the creation of this logo. Red and yellow were chosen to represent Asia while blue and yellow were used for Europe. The silk threads are bound together by a green ribbon symbolic of the vast green forests of Lao PDR and a green environment – a commitment shared by delegates from both continents. A beautiful Dok Champa or frangipani, the national flower of the host nation, tops the design off as a symbolic gesture of welcome to all the delegates to Lao PDR.
